World Cup 2026: Kurt Okraku confident Ghana can defy expectations

Kurt Okraku has expressed confidence in Ghana’s prospects at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the Black Stars should not be underestimated despite being drawn into a challenging group.

The Ghana national football team secured qualification for the expanded 48-team tournament and will compete in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.

Although many football observers have described the group as one of the most difficult in the competition, Okraku believes Ghana has the quality and determination to compete strongly against its opponents.

Speaking on the Delay Show, he pointed to the unpredictable nature of football, noting that tournament history is filled with examples of underdogs outperforming expectations while favourites have sometimes fallen short.

According to him, Ghana possesses a talented squad capable of challenging top teams, and ongoing preparations are aimed at ensuring the Black Stars are fully ready for the tournament.

Okraku stated that no football nation should ever be written off, including Ghana, adding that his ambition is to see the Black Stars compete for the ultimate prize in world football.

His remarks reflect growing optimism within Ghanaian football circles about the potential of the current squad, which combines experienced players with a promising generation of emerging talent making strides at both club and international levels.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico, offers Ghana another opportunity to make its mark on the global stage.

The Black Stars have a proud World Cup history, highlighted by their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the best performance by an African nation at the tournament at the time.

While England and Croatia are widely regarded as favourites to advance from Group L, belief remains strong among Ghanaian supporters that the Black Stars can challenge expectations and produce impressive performances at the tournament.

With preparations gathering momentum, Okraku’s comments underscore the confidence and ambition surrounding Ghana’s World Cup campaign as the nation looks forward to football’s biggest event.
