Healthcare services at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have been severely disrupted after doctors embarked on an indefinite strike in protest against the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo.
The industrial action has brought medical services at the facility to a near halt, leaving patients without access to doctors in wards, emergency units, and outpatient departments. Many individuals seeking consultations, surgeries, and admissions have reportedly been turned away, while relatives of critically ill patients remain at the hospital hoping for medical assistance.
Several patients and caregivers expressed frustration over the situation, with some appealing to the government and the doctors to resolve the impasse quickly to restore healthcare services.
According to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Baidoo’s suspension followed his decision to suspend emergency admissions at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, a move the ministry said conflicted with directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.
The doctors, however, have objected to the suspension and are demanding the reinstatement of the CEO. They have indicated that the strike will continue indefinitely until their concerns are addressed.
The ongoing dispute has raised concerns about access to healthcare at one of Ghana’s largest referral hospitals, with patients bearing the brunt of the disruption as negotiations between the parties remain unresolved.
