Fifteen Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have dismissed as false claims made by flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.
Dr. Acheampong had alleged that some of the MPs, after publicly endorsing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2028 flagbearership bid, secretly contacted him to retract their support.
In a joint statement signed by all 15 lawmakers, the MPs strongly denied the allegation and dared Dr. Acheampong to publicly name those he claims reached out to him.
“We, the fifteen (15) Members of Parliament from the Eastern Region who have openly and publicly declared our unflinching support for His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, wish to categorically refute and set the record straight regarding the unfortunate claims made by Hon. Bryan Acheampong in his attempt to undermine our endorsement of Dr. Bawumia,” the statement read.
The MPs described the claims as “fabrications” aimed at discrediting their collective decision and insisted no such private calls were made. They further rejected Acheampong’s assertion that he had exchanged text messages with Dr. Bawumia over the matter, stressing that their checks revealed no such communication had occurred.
The group also accused Dr. Acheampong of spreading misinformation about campaign financing in the region. They refuted his claims of personally funding the NPP’s 2024 campaign in the Eastern Region, clarifying that resources came from party financiers and businessmen who supported Dr. Bawumia’s presidential campaign. Acheampong, they said, only facilitated disbursement in his role as Regional Campaign Coordinator.
“It is regrettable that Hon. Bryan Acheampong has been moving around polling stations sowing seeds of division by claiming he personally disbursed campaign funds and directing anger at constituency executives and MPs,” the statement added.
The MPs reaffirmed their “unwavering support” for Dr. Bawumia and urged Acheampong to desist from actions they believe threaten the party’s unity.
