3 dead, 20 hospitalised in Accra New Town building collapse – Interior Minister

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed that three people have died following the collapse of a three-storey building at Accra New Town, while 20 others are receiving treatment in hospital.

The victims—two women and a man—are yet to be identified. The incident occurred on Sunday at an uncompleted structure within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School, a site also used for Christian worship.

Emergency responders, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the National Ambulance Service, worked through the night to rescue victims trapped beneath the rubble.

The Minister said authorities carefully verified casualty figures, confirming that 23 people were involved in the incident. Of these, 20 survived and are being treated at facilities including the Police Hospital and Mamobi, as well as a private hospital.

He noted that the victims include 15 females and eight males, with seven minors among them. However, none of the deceased are minors.

Rescue efforts remain ongoing amid fears that more people could still be trapped, as the cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.
