Prosecution witness alleges Chairman Wontumi ordered mining in protected Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve

A prosecution witness in the ongoing illegal mining case involving Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has told the Accra High Court that the politician allegedly directed mining operations within the protected Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve without obtaining the necessary authorisation.

Chief Inspector Eugene Akpo Glover, the lead investigator in the case, made the assertion during cross-examination before the Criminal Division of the High Court on Tuesday. According to the investigator, evidence gathered during the course of investigations indicates that mining activities were undertaken in the reserve without the required legal permits.

Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, are facing multiple charges related to alleged illegal mining operations and violations of regulations governing activities within protected forest areas.

The witness maintained that investigations conducted by the prosecution linked the accused persons to unauthorised mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, an area protected by law from such operations.

The case, which has attracted significant public and political attention because of the involvement of the prominent New Patriotic Party figure, remains before the Accra High Court. Proceedings are expected to continue as the prosecution presents further evidence in support of its case.

Chairman Wontumi and the other accused persons have denied the allegations and are standing trial as the court continues to hear testimony from witnesses.
