Gov’t processing UTAG book and research allowance payments, no strike expected – Haruna Iddrisu

The government is taking steps to address concerns raised by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) over delays in the payment of book and research allowances, with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu assuring that no industrial action is expected.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana National Research Fund in Accra, Mr. Iddrisu disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has completed the necessary documentation to facilitate the release of the funds and that processes are underway to ensure timely payment to lecturers.

He expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved amicably and assured members of UTAG that President John Dramani Mahama was committed to preventing a strike.

Addressing the association’s leadership, the minister noted that while discussions may continue over the exchange rate used in calculating the allowances, there should be no doubt about the government’s commitment to making the payments.

Mr. Iddrisu reiterated the administration’s dedication to supporting research and strengthening the country’s academic environment, stressing that efforts are being made to maintain stability within the tertiary education sector.

His remarks come amid concerns by UTAG over delays in the disbursement of book and research allowances, which had raised fears of a possible nationwide strike. However, the minister maintained that ongoing engagements and payment processes should avert any disruption to academic activities.
