Baba Yara Stadium Fails CAF Test: Kotoko to Face Wydad in Accra

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has turned down Asante Kotoko’s request to host their CAF Confederation Cup second-round first-leg match against Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The decision means the crucial encounter will now take place at the Accra Sports Stadium instead of Kotoko’s traditional home ground.

Kotoko, Ghana’s sole representative in continental competition, will face Wydad on Sunday, October 19, at 3:00 p.m. GMT. The Porcupine Warriors had hoped to capitalize on home advantage in Kumasi, but CAF ruled that the Baba Yara Stadium does not meet the current standards required for hosting international fixtures of this level.

“Management regrettably announces that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has declined approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Kotoko’s CAF Confederation Cup clash against Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco,” part of a club statement read.

Following the early exit of Bibiani Gold Stars from the CAF Champions League in the first round, Asante Kotoko remains Ghana’s only representative in this year’s inter-club competitions. The Kumasi-based giants advanced to the second round after overcoming Nigeria’s Kwara United.

On the domestic front, Kotoko has enjoyed a promising start to the Ghana Premier League, recording two wins and a draw in their opening three matches. They are set to face city rivals Nations FC on Saturday, October 11, as preparations intensify for their continental test against Wydad.
