GES suspends classes at Accra New Town School after building collapse

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended classes at Accra New Town Experimental D/A School following the collapse of a nearby building that left three people dead and 20 others injured.

Director-General Ernest Kofi Davis said the decision was taken after a security assessment at the school. He noted that GES will hold an emergency meeting with relevant stakeholders to determine the way forward and assess the safety of existing structures.

The incident has raised concerns about infrastructure safety in the area, prompting calls for urgent inspections of nearby school facilities.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded shortly after the incident and carried out a search and rescue operation. Of the 23 people trapped under the rubble, 20 were rescued, including three minors who were taken for medical treatment. Three victims—two women and one man—were confirmed dead, with their bodies handed over to the police for further investigation.
