President John Dramani Mahama has removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office, effective September 1, 2025, following the findings of a constitutional committee that confirmed allegations of misconduct.
The investigation revealed that she authorized unjustified expenses during foreign travels involving her family and also attempted to improperly influence judicial appointments.
She was first suspended in April 2025 pending the probe. Despite several legal challenges to stop the process, the courts dismissed her applications.
Her removal marks a historic and controversial moment in Ghana’s judiciary, raising debates about due process, accountability, and the independence of the courts.
