Wontumi Defends Record and Challenges Certificate Critics on Eastern Region Campaign Tour

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has taken his campaign for the national chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the Eastern Region, where he called for unity among party members and dismissed concerns about his academic qualifications.

Speaking to party executives in the Kwahu area, Wontumi pointed to his three-term tenure as Ashanti Regional Chairman as proof of his capability to lead the party nationally. He questioned why his credentials were only being scrutinized now, describing the criticism as politically motivated.

He also urged the NPP to strengthen internal cohesion following its defeat in the 2024 general elections, warning that divisions could benefit the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Wontumi positioned himself as a unifying figure ahead of the party’s 2028 campaign in support of Mahamudu Bawumia.

Meanwhile, his campaign coincides with an ongoing legal case involving six charges linked to mining activities in the Western Region. The case, currently before the High Court in Accra, is set to continue on April 2, 2026.

Other contenders in the race include John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, and Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko. The NPP is yet to open nominations for the position.
