The Nigerian government has announced plans to evacuate over 742 of its citizens from South Africa before June 30 amid growing concerns over xenophobic tensions and anti-immigrant protests in the country.
According to officials, hundreds of Nigerians have already undergone screening and documentation processes, with arrangements being made to ensure their safe and orderly return. The evacuation exercise forms part of measures aimed at protecting citizens who have expressed fears over their safety following recent attacks and increasing hostility toward foreign nationals.
Authorities in Abuja have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians abroad, emphasizing that the decision to facilitate voluntary repatriation is intended to prevent further risks to lives and property.
The move comes as South Africa braces for possible unrest ahead of a June 30 deadline set by anti-immigration groups demanding the departure of undocumented foreigners. Several African countries, including Ghana, have also undertaken similar measures to assist their nationals affected by the tensions.
