Free Primary Healthcare: The WHO stands with Ghana to ensure no one is left behind – African Region Representative

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Representative for Africa, Mohammed Janabi, has commended Ghana for making significant progress in advancing healthcare through its primary healthcare initiative.

In a message of support, he highlighted the critical role of primary healthcare as the foundation of strong and resilient health systems, as well as a key driver of universal health coverage. He reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Ghana in ensuring inclusive access to healthcare, stressing that no one should be left behind.

The endorsement comes as the government steps up efforts to expand access to essential health services across districts, with a focus on preventive care, community-based interventions, and easing pressure on higher-level health facilities.

Health experts say the initiative will improve early detection of diseases, enable timely treatment, and strengthen prevention at the community level—factors considered vital to improving overall health outcomes, especially among vulnerable and underserved populations.

They also note that a stronger primary healthcare system can help identify conditions earlier, reduce complications, and enhance treatment success rates.

The programme forms part of Ghana’s broader push toward achieving universal health coverage, ensuring that all citizens can access quality healthcare services without facing financial hardship.
