Fire at Akosombo substation disrupts power supply across Ghana

The Ghana Grid Company Limited has confirmed a major fire outbreak at its Akosombo Substation, causing power supply disruptions in parts of the country.

In a statement issued on April 23, the company said the incident occurred around 2:01 p.m., affecting operations at the facility and interrupting electricity transmission across the national grid.

GRIDCo noted that emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to contain the fire and assess the extent of the damage. Technical teams have also begun work to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

The company indicated that a full assessment is underway to determine the impact on infrastructure and power delivery, with engineers focused on stabilising the system to limit further outages.

It assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to manage the situation and maintain grid stability, while urging calm as restoration efforts continue.

The Akosombo Substation plays a crucial role in Ghana’s power transmission network, linking electricity from major generation sources such as the Volta River Authority to distribution companies and large consumers nationwide.

As a result, any disruption at the facility is expected to have widespread effects, particularly in areas that rely on power transmitted through the eastern corridor of the grid.

GRIDCo said it will provide further updates, including details on the cause of the fire and timelines for full restoration.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a reliable electricity supply and maintaining the stability of the national interconnected transmission system, which underpins power distribution in Ghana and across parts of West Africa.
