The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that the government has settled all outstanding payments owed to contractors working on major road projects nationwide.
Speaking during an inspection of the Kasoa–Winneba Highway on Thursday, April 23, led by John Dramani Mahama, the Minister stated that all contractors who have submitted work certificates for both ongoing and newly initiated projects have been fully paid.
He stressed that prompt payment is key to accelerating infrastructure development and preventing delays that have previously affected road construction efforts.
Agbodza disclosed that more than GH¢12 billion has been disbursed toward inherited road projects, following a policy decision to continue rather than halt initiatives started by previous administrations.
He noted that this approach has ensured continuity, preventing abandonment and prioritising the completion of existing projects.
The Minister also highlighted the government’s focus on boosting local industry, indicating that a large share of road contracts has been awarded to Ghanaian contractors, thereby creating jobs and building local capacity.
Addressing progress on the Kasoa–Winneba corridor, he described the project as vital for improving connectivity and reducing congestion along one of the country’s busiest routes.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by motorists, especially on sections under construction, but assured that some relief is imminent. According to him, one of the most difficult stretches will be ready for use within three weeks, allowing partial opening to ease traffic.
He added that interim traffic management measures, including the use of service roads, will be introduced to improve movement during the construction period.
Although the project is officially scheduled for completion in March 2027, Agbodza revealed that discussions are ongoing with the contractor to finish the work ahead of schedule, with a new target of December this year.
He recognised the inconvenience experienced by commuters, particularly during peak hours, and assured the public that efforts are being made to shorten the construction timeline.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustained investment in road infrastructure, aimed at enhancing connectivity, supporting economic growth, and delivering long-term benefits.
