Ghana has set an ambitious target of a podium finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games following the official unveiling of its para-athlete team by the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Ghana.
At a ceremony themed “Rising Beyond Limits, Carrying the Dreams of a Nation,” NPC Ghana introduced a five-member contingent that will represent the country at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled for July 28 to August 8, 2026, in Scotland.
The event highlighted both sporting excellence and national ambition, with officials emphasising inclusion, resilience, and Ghana’s growing presence in para sports.
NPC President Samson Deen charged the athletes to aim for medals, declaring that the team is capable of competing at the highest level and delivering historic success for the country.
According to him, the selected athletes earned their places based on merit, performance, and consistency, making the squad one of Ghana’s strongest para sporting contingents in recent years.
Ghana’s Para-Athlete Contingent
The five athletes selected for Glasgow 2026 will compete in para athletics, para powerlifting, and para swimming:
Zinabu Issah – Women’s F57 Para Athletics
Botsyo Nkegbe – Men’s T54 Wheelchair Racing
Hayford Addai – Men’s T47 Para Athletics
Haruna Tahiru – Men’s +100kg Para Powerlifting
Promise Aheto – Para Swimming
A Call for Inclusion and Support
Mr. Deen reiterated that para sports should be recognised as a platform for excellence rather than charity, stressing that athletes with disabilities deserve equal opportunities to compete and succeed.
He urged stakeholders to support para sports development, noting that investment in the sector contributes to national development, talent discovery, and social inclusion.
He also called on the media to highlight positive stories about para athletes to inspire national pride and encourage broader participation in sports.
Building on Ghana’s Legacy
The NPC President reflected on Ghana’s history in para sports, citing the bronze medal won by Anita Fordjour at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi as a milestone that continues to inspire new generations of athletes.
He encouraged Team Ghana to draw motivation from that legacy and compete fearlessly in Glasgow.
Eyes on Glasgow 2026
With preparations underway, the NPC has made its expectations clear: Ghana is not attending the Games merely to participate, but to compete for medals and national pride.
