The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory urging Ghanaians to exercise increased caution when planning trips to South Africa due to rising anti-African sentiments and planned nationwide demonstrations.
In a statement dated June 29, 2026, the ministry highlighted concerns over protests scheduled for June 30, as well as reports of calls by certain activist groups for an “unofficial departure deadline” directed at foreign African nationals.
According to the ministry, these developments could heighten tensions and potentially expose foreign African residents and visitors to acts of intimidation, violence, or other security threats.
The advisory encouraged prospective travellers to carefully assess their travel plans and remain vigilant while in South Africa amid the current atmosphere.
Despite these concerns, the ministry acknowledged assurances from the South African government, which has stated that the alleged deadline carries no legal authority and that security agencies are prepared to maintain law and order during the demonstrations.
The Government of Ghana said it is closely monitoring the situation and urged Ghanaian citizens in South Africa to stay informed, observe safety precautions, and follow directives issued by local authorities.
