Heavy Flooding Submerges Major Roads Across Accra, Disrupting Movement

Persistent heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding across Accra and its surrounding communities, leaving several major roads and bridges submerged and causing significant disruptions to transportation.

According to reports, some of the capital’s busiest routes have been severely affected, prompting authorities to advise motorists and residents to avoid flooded areas and remain in safe locations until conditions improve.

Among the hardest-hit locations is the N1 Highway, where sections of the road have been overtaken by floodwaters, resulting in heavy traffic congestion and delays.

Other affected areas include Mallam, Achimota, Apenkwa towards Tesano, Spintex, Atomic Junction in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

Flooding has also been reported along the Pig Farm–Achimota Forest stretch in Dzorwulu, creating traffic challenges for commuters.

The Accra-Kasoa Highway near Weija has experienced rising water levels, making travel hazardous, while the GNAT Road Bridge has reportedly been submerged.

In the eastern parts of Accra, floodwaters have inundated areas such as Tse Addo and Teshie Bush Road, including the Korle Bridge at Tse Addo. The bridge linking the Astro Turf area to Fertiliser Road has also been affected.

Other roads impacted by the flooding include the Tema-Accra Beach Road, the Tema Motorway, and sections of Sakumono. Residents of Greda Estate have reported difficulties leaving the community due to rising water levels, while the LEKMA–Kofi Annan route has been described as impassable.

Authorities have cautioned both motorists and pedestrians against attempting to cross flooded roads, warning that conditions remain dangerous and unpredictable.

Residents are encouraged to remain indoors where possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor official updates for safety information.

Emergency assistance can be accessed through the national emergency numbers 112 and 191.
