NADMO confirms 34 deaths nationwide following Monday’s devastating floods

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that 34 people have died nationwide following the severe floods that hit parts of the country on Monday, June 29.

According to Richard Amo Yartey, Director of Inspectorate at NADMO, 12 of the deaths were recorded in Accra alone, with the remaining fatalities spread across other affected regions. He cautioned that the total death toll could rise as ongoing verification efforts continue, especially as missing persons are accounted for.

He explained that NADMO is still cross-checking reports of missing individuals, and some of those currently listed as missing may later be confirmed dead, which would increase the official figures while reducing the number of missing persons.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Thursday, July 2, Mr. Amo Yartey said emergency response teams are actively engaged in recovery operations and relief distribution across affected areas. He added that supplies are being dispatched from warehouses to support displaced residents nationwide.

Preliminary data from NADMO indicates that the floods affected about 89,736 people across seven regions. The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest impact, with 54,712 people affected, followed by the Central Region with 21,882.

Other affected areas include the Volta Region, where 8,534 people were displaced; the Ashanti Region with 1,461; the Western Region with 2,020; the Western North Region with 937 homeless persons; and the Eastern Region, which recorded 190 displaced individuals in Abuakwa South.

Authorities say relief efforts are ongoing as they work to support victims and assess the full extent of the disaster.
