Education Ministry Suspends SHS Graduation Ceremonies Over Extravagant Celebrations

The Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate suspension of all Senior High School (SHS) graduation ceremonies nationwide due to concerns about increasing displays of wealth and extravagance during such events.

In a statement issued on June 20, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said the decision was prompted by growing public concern over the conduct of some graduation ceremonies, which have increasingly featured lavish displays that undermine the values of discipline, modesty, and character development expected within educational institutions.

The Ministry stressed that graduation ceremonies should focus on celebrating students’ academic achievements and personal growth rather than showcasing wealth. It condemned any actions by students, parents, guardians, or other stakeholders that distract from the true purpose of school events.

As a result, the Minister has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to halt all SHS graduation ceremonies while existing guidelines are reviewed.

In a related move, the GES has banned extravagant post-examination celebrations on school campuses, including the presentation of expensive gifts such as cars and money bouquets to students. The Service noted that such practices create social divisions, shift attention away from academic excellence, and may negatively affect students from less privileged backgrounds.

GES warned that school heads who permit such activities on their premises will face sanctions and called on parents and stakeholders to support efforts to preserve discipline, equality, and the core values of the education system.
