American rapper and singer Lil Nas X has shared that he is “doing much better” following a mental health episode that led to his arrest last year and a subsequent period in rehabilitation.
In a three-minute video posted online, the Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Montero Hill, said he spent several months in rehab before returning home to Atlanta to be with his family.
His update comes after a challenging period in 2025 when he was arrested and charged with allegedly assaulting police officers in Los Angeles after being found walking in the street in a distressed state. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In April, a judge approved his participation in a mental health diversion programme, which could eventually lead to the charges being dismissed. The decision followed a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, with the court noting that his behaviour at the time appeared inconsistent with his usual conduct. Bipolar disorder is a long-term mental health condition characterised by extreme mood swings, ranging from emotional highs to deep lows.
In his message, Lil Nas X said he had suspected his condition for years but initially resisted seeking help or medication due to concerns about stigma and public perception. He also reflected on the personal challenges he has faced in the public eye, including balancing fame, identity, and mental health struggles. Despite the difficulties, the artist said he is now feeling more at peace, creating freely again, and experiencing less anxiety. He acknowledged that returning to social media felt uncomfortable after a long break but said he wanted to reassure fans about his progress.
Lil Nas X also hinted at new music, saying he is not yet ready to fully return to the spotlight but is preparing future releases. He concluded by thanking fans for their support, expressing gratitude for their loyalty and encouragement throughout his journey.
