NPP Has No Obligation to Produce Ken Ofori-Atta for Prosecution – Ahiagbah

The Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that the party is not responsible for producing former Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta for prosecution over alleged corruption-related charges.

Speaking on TV3 NewsCentral on June 17, Mr. Ahiagbah argued that Ghana’s laws, conventions, and political practices do not require a political party to present its members to state authorities for investigation or prosecution.

He explained that individuals appointed to public office are accountable to the state in their personal capacity, and not through their political parties, citing that similar situations have occurred under previous administrations.

Mr. Ahiagbah also accused the government of applying a selective approach in its anti-corruption efforts, alleging that political opponents are being targeted while allies are protected.

He further argued that legal proceedings against Mr. Ofori-Atta could proceed even in his absence, referencing constitutional provisions he believes allow for prosecution in absentia.

According to him, the issue should be treated strictly as a legal matter between the former Finance Minister and the state, rather than a responsibility of the NPP.

He stressed that the party has no obligation to produce Mr. Ofori-Atta for questioning or prosecution.

Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently facing multiple corruption-related allegations linked to financial transactions during his tenure as Finance Minister, including claims involving a contract that allegedly caused significant financial loss to the state.

Authorities had previously initiated steps toward securing an INTERPOL Red Notice after he reportedly failed to respond to investigative invitations, although the notice was later withdrawn.
