AMA Gives Traders at Unauthorised Bus Stops 48 Hours to Vacate

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a strict 48-hour ultimatum directing all hawkers and traders occupying unauthorised bus stops, pedestrian walkways, and road shoulders across the metropolis to cease trading and vacate the locations immediately.

Announcing the decisive enforcement push, Mayor of Accra Michael Kpakpo Allotey emphasized that the unauthorized conversion of public transport terminals and bus shelters into trading stalls severely exacerbates traffic congestion, forces commuters to board and alight in dangerous traffic lanes, and heightens the risk of road accidents. The directive follows mounting pressure from commercial transport unions, who recently petitioned authorities over obstacles hampering smooth operations at major transit hubs like the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota, and the Central Business District (CBD).

The AMA has warned that once the 48-hour window expires, enforcement teams will intensify city-wide operations to clear the spaces, confiscate goods, and prosecute offenders who disregard the directive. City authorities reiterated their commitment to upholding public order, ensuring pedestrian safety, and keeping public transport infrastructure accessible for its intended purpose.
