Farmers Clash with Lands Commission and Newmont Over Delayed Compensation for Ahafo North Project

Farmers and landowners across affected communities in the Ahafo Region have launched a stern protest against the Lands Commission and Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, demanding the immediate settlement of long-delayed compensation tied to the Ahafo North mining project.

Represented by the Concerned Farmers Association spanning Terchire, Susuanso, Afrisipakrom, and Adrobaal, the aggrieved residents expressed deep frustration over protracted delays impacting acquisitions made under Executive Instrument (E.I.) 356 of 2023 and E.I. 273 of 2024. Association leaders pointed out that families whose lands and properties were seized under E.I. 356 have waited nearly three years without receiving any financial recompense since the state took possession and handed the terrain over to Newmont.

Furthermore, the farmers strongly rejected recent petitions filed by Newmont characterizing certain local structures as “speculative”—a designation they argue is false, noting that the buildings and farms existed long before the mining expansion plans. With primary livelihoods including cocoa, oil palm, and food crop plantations stripped away without timely relief, affected families report severe hardships meeting basic needs, school fees, and healthcare expenses. The association is pressing the Lands Commission to dismiss the disputed claims, provide a transparent written timetable, and disburse all outstanding compensations without further delay.
