Minister for Transport Mahama Ayariga has clarified that the proposed expansion of the Quality Bus Transit system, popularly known as Aayalolo, is specifically designed to target private vehicle owners rather than displace local commercial bus drivers, commonly referred to as trotro operators.
Speaking at a public engagement, Ayariga addressed rising apprehensions among commercial transport unions regarding potential job losses and operational conflicts. He explained that the strategic vision for the high-capacity bus transit system is to provide a reliable, efficient, and comfortable public transport alternative that encourages commuters who currently drive private cars to opt for public transit, thereby reducing vehicular congestion and air pollution on major urban corridors.
The Minister emphasized that trotro operators remain an indispensable component of Ghana’s public transportation ecosystem, serving critical feeder routes and inner-city networks that high-capacity buses cannot easily navigate. He assured transport unions that the Ministry is actively developing collaborative frameworks to integrate existing operators into feeder services, modern management models, and upgraded terminal infrastructure to ensure a sustainable and complementary transit network.
