Colgate, Melcom and Education Ministry Launch GH¢240,000 Scholarship Campaign for Schoolchildren

Colgate has partnered with retail giant Melcom and the Ministry of Education to launch an eight-week scholarship campaign aimed at supporting the education of underprivileged Ghanaian schoolchildren while promoting oral health and hygiene.

Dubbed “Give a Child a Future to Smile About,” the initiative will award scholarships totalling GH¢240,000 to 16 brilliant but needy students, with each beneficiary receiving GH¢15,000 to support their education.

The funds are expected to help cover essential educational expenses, including school fees, textbooks, uniforms and other learning materials, easing the financial burden on families and helping children remain in school.

The campaign was officially launched in Accra, where the partners highlighted the connection between education, good oral health, confidence and children’s overall well-being.

Education Ministry Welcomes Private-Sector Support

Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Clement Apaak commended Colgate and Melcom for complementing the government’s efforts to make education accessible, equitable and inclusive.

He noted that while the government continues to invest in initiatives such as Free Senior High School (Free SHS), partnerships with private-sector organisations remain important in reaching vulnerable children and addressing gaps in educational support.

Dr. Apaak encouraged parents, guardians, teachers and consumers to support the campaign by purchasing Colgate products from Melcom stores.

He explained that participation would help bring more children within reach of the scholarship opportunities.

Colgate Reaffirms Commitment to Education and Oral Health

Colgate West Africa General Manager Richard Forwag reiterated the company’s commitment to improving education and community well-being.

He highlighted the company’s social impact programmes, which he said have reached millions of schoolchildren across Ghana through oral health education, lessons on proper brushing techniques and free dental screenings.

Forwag described the scholarship campaign as an extension of Colgate’s efforts to build healthier and more confident communities by supporting both children’s educational needs and personal well-being.

Melcom to Support Nationwide Participation

Representatives of Melcom also pledged the company’s support, noting that its network of branches across the country would help mobilise families in all 16 regions.

Under the campaign, consumers must purchase any two Colgate toothpastes at a participating Melcom store and scan the campaign’s QR code at the point of purchase to enter the promotion.

Weekly draws will be conducted to select beneficiaries, with organisers indicating that the process is intended to promote transparency and nationwide participation.

Turning Everyday Purchases into Educational Support

The eight-week campaign seeks to provide financial assistance to schoolchildren while encouraging greater awareness of oral hygiene.

By linking everyday purchases to scholarship opportunities, Colgate, Melcom and the Ministry of Education aim to involve consumers in supporting children’s education.

The initiative also highlights the role corporate partnerships can play in complementing public education programmes and improving access to learning resources for students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.
