Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Jinapor, is expected to address the nation today, Monday, April 27, at 2 p.m., to provide an update on recent developments in the country’s electricity sector.
The briefing comes amid growing public concern over the stability and management of power supply following a series of significant incidents, including the recent fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre and leadership changes within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.
The address will give the Minister an opportunity to clarify the circumstances surrounding the Akosombo fire and outline measures being taken to stabilise the national grid and prevent further disruptions.
GRIDCo CEO asked to step aside
A major issue expected to feature prominently in the briefing is the directive for the CEO of the Ghana Grid Company to step aside pending investigations into the fire incident.
The blaze, which occurred earlier this week, significantly impacted the national electricity grid, resulting in power outages across several parts of the country.
Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the decision in a Facebook post, explaining that the move is intended to allow for a thorough and independent investigation into the cause of the fire and its broader implications.
ECG leadership shake-up
The Minister is also expected to address recent leadership changes within the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Ashanti Region.
The shake-up follows concerns about the region’s capacity to effectively manage electricity distribution, particularly in the aftermath of the Akosombo incident and ongoing operational challenges within the energy sector.
Overall, the briefing is anticipated to provide clarity on government actions, reassure the public, and outline steps being taken to strengthen Ghana’s power distribution system.
