Government settles $29.5m debt owed to Suame Interchange contractors

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that the government has fully cleared $29.5 million in outstanding payments owed to contractors working on the Suame Interchange Project.

He made the disclosure during an inspection of ongoing works, where he also reassured residents of Asanteman of the government’s commitment to completing the major infrastructure project. According to the Minister, an additional GH¢3 billion has been allocated to speed up construction and enhance the quality of the road network.

He explained that the extra funding will also support the construction of the Suame bypass road, which is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Emphasising the government’s approach, Mr. Agbodza noted that funds allocated to the project would not be reduced but rather increased to maximise its overall impact.

He further stated that the current administration remains focused on completing ongoing projects inherited from previous governments. Referring to President John Dramani Mahama, he stressed that the administration is committed to seeing existing projects through to completion.

The Minister also revealed that, through the Ministry of Finance Ghana, the government recently settled contractor arrears exceeding GH¢12 billion, most of which related to projects awarded prior to the current administration.

Providing an update on progress, Mr. Agbodza indicated that a section of the Suame road works is expected to be completed by the end of this year, while the entire interchange project is scheduled for completion by 2028. Work on the bypass component, he added, is also advancing steadily.

He assured residents in Kumasi and surrounding areas that the government is determined to deliver the project on time, highlighting its importance in improving traffic flow and connectivity within the Ashanti Region.
