Crystal Palace have won their first-ever European trophy after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1–0 in the UEFA Conference League final held in Leipzig.
The tightly contested final at the Red Bull Arena saw both sides, appearing in their first European final, begin cautiously with few clear chances in a tense opening half.
Rayo Vallecano threatened through Alemao and Unai López, but failed to convert their opportunities, while Crystal Palace gradually gained control and came close when Tyrick Mitchell headed narrowly wide from an Adam Wharton cross before halftime.
The breakthrough came early in the second half when a powerful effort from Adam Wharton was saved by goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, only for the rebound to fall to Jean-Philippe Mateta, who reacted quickly to score fromclose range and give Palace the lead.
The goal, Mateta’s 16th of the season, proved decisive and marked a defining moment in his career after a potential January exit from the club collapsed following injury concerns.
Rayo Vallecano pushed for an equaliser and came close when Yeremy Pino hit the post twice from a free kick and later created another chance, but Palace’s defence held firm to preserve their lead until full-time.
The victory caps a remarkable spell for manager Oliver Glasner, who transformed Crystal Palace into a competitive force in both domestic and European competitions before departing the club following the final.
Under his leadership, the club also achieved success in domestic cup competitions, and this European triumph adds another milestone to his tenure.
The win contributes to a strong European season for English clubs, alongside other successes from Premier League sides in continental competitions, while Palace’s victory will be remembered as a historic moment for the
club and its supporters.
