4,000 Public Sector Workers Risk Salary Deductions Over Unpaid Student Loans

The Controller and Accountant-General, Kwesi Agyei, has revealed that approximately 4,000 public sector employees with outstanding student loan debts may soon have deductions made directly from their salaries to recover the amounts owed.

Speaking at the launch of the Student Loan Trust Fund’s (SLTF) 20th anniversary celebrations on June 18, 2026, Mr. Agyei disclosed that the affected workers have been identified through a collaboration between the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and the SLTF.

According to him, discussions are underway to determine the modalities for implementing the deductions in accordance with existing legal and payroll frameworks.

Mr. Agyei explained that the move is aimed at improving loan recovery rates, encouraging repayment compliance, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the student loan programme for future beneficiaries.

At the same event, the Chief Executive Officer of the Student Loan Trust Fund, Dr. Saajida Shiraz, announced that access to the Fund’s standard loan package has increased by 50 percent.

She attributed the expansion to the timely release of funds from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), which has enabled the SLTF to disburse more than GH¢127 million to over 46,000 students while meeting all loan requests submitted.

Board Chairman of GETFund, Emmanuel Bedzrah, also reiterated the Fund’s commitment to ensuring prompt financial support for student loan disbursements.

As the Student Loan Trust Fund marks its 20th anniversary, the institution says it remains focused on strengthening loan recovery efforts while expanding access to financial assistance for students in tertiary institutions across Ghana.
