Akufo-Addo Government Invested GH¢540 Million in Flood Control – Asenso-Boakye

Former Works and Housing Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has revealed that the Akufo-Addo administration spent GH¢540 million on flood control measures over its eight-year tenure to reduce the impact of flooding across the country.

The Bantama Member of Parliament said a significant portion of the investment was used to construct and upgrade drainage systems, as well as implement other flood mitigation projects aimed at improving national resilience.

Speaking at a Capacity Building Workshop for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Accra, Mr. Asenso-Boakye urged the current administration to maintain and expand efforts in flood prevention, particularly in vulnerable communities.

He emphasized that while infrastructure development remains crucial, strict enforcement of physical planning regulations is equally important in addressing Ghana’s recurring flooding challenges.

According to him, sustained investment in drainage infrastructure must be complemented by proper settlement planning and adherence to development controls.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee, Queenstar Pokuah Sawyerr, reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at tackling flooding in Accra and other affected areas.

She noted that the Committee will continue to engage with local assemblies to assess their response to flooding and explore policy measures to strengthen long-term flood management strategies.
