The Ghanaian passport has been ranked 68th globally and 11th in Africa in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, placing it among the continent’s strongest passports.
According to the latest rankings, Ghanaian passport holders can currently access about 67 destinations worldwide without requiring a visa in advance.
The ranking marks a significant improvement for Ghana after the passport dropped to its lowest-ever position of 84th globally in 2021. In 2006, Ghana ranked 53rd in the world.
Reacting to the latest ranking, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs credited the improvement to the leadership of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
In a statement, the ministry said Ghana was “bouncing back stronger and better” and expressed optimism about restoring the Ghanaian passport to a higher global standing in the coming years.
As a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ghanaian passport holders continue to enjoy free movement within the West African sub-region, alongside access to several visa-free and visa-on-arrival destinations globally.
