Upper West Regional Minister: 1,400 Burkinabes housed in resettlement camp

The Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing, has disclosed that approximately 1,400 Burkinabe nationals are currently staying at a resettlement camp in the region.

Speaking on a Citi FM programme, the minister explained that the camp is situated in Zini, close to the Burkina Faso border, and was established to manage the increasing number of arrivals entering Ghana.

According to him, the population at the facility has risen from about 700 people to roughly 1,400, with women and children making up the majority of those being accommodated.

He noted that the camp initially consisted mainly of temporary tents but has since been improved with more durable structures through support from organisations such as the Ghana Refugee Board and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The minister further stated that residents are receiving various forms of assistance, including educational support and language training to help children learn both English and French.

He also indicated that security measures at the camp have been enhanced, with personnel from the police and military deployed to maintain safety and order.

Mr. Puozuing assured the public that all individuals entering the camp undergo screening processes to verify their identities and determine the reasons for their arrival, adding that the situation remains peaceful and under control.
