Prisons Officer Interdicted Over Alleged Attempt to Smuggle Indian Hemp into Kete-Krachi Prison

The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu following his arrest for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison.

According to the Service, the incident occurred on June 19, 2026, during routine security screening of officers reporting for night duty. Alert prison officers reportedly discovered and confiscated the suspected narcotic substance at the prison entrance before it could be taken into the facility.

Following the discovery, Osei-Bonsu was handed over to the police for investigation. He was later arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court, where he was remanded into custody for two weeks. The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2026.

In line with regulations governing the Prisons Service, the officer has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of both the criminal case and internal disciplinary proceedings.

The Ghana Prisons Service reaffirmed its strict stance against drug-related offences and the smuggling of prohibited items, including mobile phones, into correctional facilities.

The Service also commended the officers whose vigilance led to the interception of the suspected contraband, stressing its continued commitment to professionalism, discipline, integrity, and maintaining security within prison establishments across the country.
