A major demolition exercise has commenced at the iconic La Pleasure Beach in Accra amid a heavy security presence, leaving business operators, workers, and local residents scrambling to salvage their personal belongings and commercial assets.
The joint operation—executed under the supervision of armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the 48th Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces—resulted in the leveling of numerous beachfront structures. Affected vendors and facility operators expressed shock at the sudden action, reporting that while a verbal notice was issued roughly two weeks prior, they were given less than an hour’s final warning on the day of the exercise before heavy machinery began clearing the site. Management of the facility had previously resisted demands to vacate, citing an ongoing court dispute regarding the ownership of the prime coastal land.
The exercise created a tense and emotional atmosphere, as hundreds of traders, artisans, and hospitality workers who rely on the popular resort for their livelihoods watched their facilities destroyed. Security forces maintained a strict cordon around the perimeter to prevent crowd interference as site clearing continued.
