Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu says the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) will meet with teacher unions on Tuesday, October 6, to resume negotiations on their collective agreement and conditions of service.
The announcement follows a meeting between the government team and representatives of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG) on Monday, September 28, 2026.
The meeting formed part of government’s efforts to resolve the ongoing strike by the teacher unions.
Mr Iddrisu said the discussions were constructive and focused on addressing the concerns raised by the unions. He added that government had appealed to the unions to suspend the strike while negotiations continued.
“The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission will meet with the teacher unions next Tuesday to continue negotiations on their collective agreement and conditions of service,” he said.
Rural deprived area allowance
The Minister also announced the establishment of a validation committee to review data related to government’s commitment to pay teachers a 20 percent rural deprived area allowance.
He said the committee, which will be led by the Ministry of Employment and Labour, will include representatives of the teacher unions.
According to Mr Iddrisu, government remains committed to implementing the allowance from January 2027, subject to the validation of the data and the agreement of a clear implementation roadmap.
Promoted teachers’ salary arrears
On salary arrears owed to teachers who have been promoted, Mr Iddrisu said the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) had been directed to submit the relevant data to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department for processing.
He said the data entry exercise would continue through the weekend, with regional directors and officers responsible for entering the information expected to assist in completing the process.
Government currently has data on about 29,000 teachers in relation to the outstanding arrears, while the full exercise is expected to cover nearly 80,000 promoted teachers.
Mr Iddrisu explained that September salaries had already been processed, making it impossible to reverse the payments.
