Agritech Innovator Urges Youth to Embrace Agriculture

Agritech innovator Evans Kyere-Mensah has encouraged Ghanaian youth to change their perception of agriculture, describing the sector as a major avenue for innovation, entrepreneurship and wealth creation rather than a symbol of hardship.

Speaking at the Ghana Youth Agriculture Summit 2026, he stressed that agriculture should no longer be viewed as a last resort for the unemployed but as one of the most promising opportunities for economic transformation in Ghana.

According to him, many young people have been conditioned to believe that success can only be found in corporate offices, urban centres or opportunities abroad, while farming is often wrongly associated with poverty. However, he insisted that modern agriculture is a thriving business ecosystem driven by technology, innovation and large-scale value chains.

Mr Kyere-Mensah noted that everyday commodities such as cocoa, cassava, maize, poultry, fruits and vegetables are part of billion-dollar industries capable of creating sustainable jobs and long-term wealth for young entrepreneurs. He urged young people to take advantage of the opportunities within the agricultural value chain instead of remaining spectators.

He also encouraged aspiring agripreneurs to start with the little resources available to them rather than waiting for huge capital injections, explaining that many successful businesses begin on a small scale before expanding over time.

“Great businesses often start with vision, courage and consistency. Start where you are and with what you have,” he advised.

The agritech innovator further highlighted the role of programmes such as the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), youth entrepreneurship schemes and agribusiness incubation initiatives, which provide mentorship, financing and skills training for young people interested in agriculture.

He added that agriculture extends beyond farming alone and includes opportunities in logistics, processing, exports, mechanisation, marketing, media and agricultural technology.

Mr Kyere-Mensah concluded by urging young people to boldly pursue opportunities within the sector, stressing that the next generation of wealthy Ghanaians could emerge from agribusiness and agricultural innovation.
