CAF U-17 AFCON: Black Starlets Surrender Two-Goal Lead in Draw Against Algeria

Ghana’s Black Starlets were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Algeria in their opening Group D match at the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 after giving away a two-goal advantage.

The Black Starlets made a bright start to the game, taking the lead just two minutes after kickoff. Yao Gavi Robinho reacted quickly inside the penalty area to slot home from close range and hand Ghana an early lead.

Eight minutes later, Eric Adu Gyamfi produced a stunning long-range effort to double Ghana’s advantage. Spotting the Algerian goalkeeper off his line, the midfielder unleashed a volley from the centre of the pitch that sailed straight into the net.

Ghana dominated large parts of the first half and created several opportunities to extend their lead further but failed to convert their chances into a third goal.

Algeria returned stronger after the break and managed to reduce the deficit before scoring again inside the hour mark to level

the game at 2-2.

The North Africans later had an opportunity to complete the comeback from the penalty spot, but the effort went wide, allowing Ghana to escape with a point.

The draw leaves Group D wide open after South Africa defeated Senegal in the other opening group fixture.

The Black Starlets will now turn their attention to their next match against Senegal on May 17 as they aim to secure their first victory of the tournament.
