Mini GUSA Games: UCC Top Medal Table as UEW Clinches Football Title

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), emerged champions of the 9th Mini GUSA Games football competition after defeating long-time rivals the University of Cape Coast (UCC) 1-0 in the final at UPSA Park.

The tournament, which ran from May 5 to May 15, 2026, brought together 16 tertiary institutions from across the country. Competitors participated in several sporting disciplines, including football, athletics, volleyball, 3×3 basketball, tennis, table tennis and badminton under the theme: “Integrating University Sports with Academic Professionalism.”

UEW secured victory just before halftime after converting a controversial penalty awarded by the referee.

UCC started the match strongly and created a number of attacking opportunities in the early stages, but their attempts were denied by an impressive performance from the UEW goalkeeper.

After the break, UCC increased the pressure in search of an equaliser, but UEW’s defence remained disciplined and well-organised to protect their narrow lead until the final whistle.

The victory secured the football title for UEW and reinforced the institution’s reputation as one of Ghana’s leading university sports teams.

Despite losing in the final, UCC finished at the top of the overall medal standings with an impressive total of 21 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze medals.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) placed second on the medal table after winning 15 gold medals.
