Ghana Tennis Federation warns of possible international demotion over funding gap

The Ghana Tennis Federation has raised concerns that Ghana could be demoted from the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup if the country fails to participate in the 2026 editions scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya in June and Gaborone, Botswana in July.

The federation described the situation as serious, warning that continued absence from the competitions would harm Ghana’s international tennis reputation and set back the development of the sport locally.

According to the GTF, the body has operated for about 15 years without direct government funding, depending instead on corporate sponsorships, grants from the International Tennis Federation, and support from partners such as banks, telecom companies, and sports development foundations.

It explained that the current crisis has been worsened by reduced sponsorship interest due to competing national sports priorities, as well as a 50% cut in ITF support following the loss of a key sponsorship arrangement. These factors have created a major financing shortfall affecting team travel, allowances, and tournament logistics.

The federation is therefore appealing to the Government of Ghana to restore funding support for tennis, arguing that the sport has been overlooked despite efforts to develop talent and maintain Ghana’s presence in international competitions.

It warned that without urgent intervention, Ghana risks missing key tournaments, which could ultimately lead to demotion and weaken the country’s standing in global tennis.
