The government has facilitated the evacuation of a Ghanaian citizen, Emmanuel Asamoah, following a viral video showing him being harassed in South Africa in what has been widely described as a xenophobic incident.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, showed tense confrontations as Asamoah and other foreign nationals were accused by a group of taking jobs meant for locals and were subsequently intimidated.
The incident sparked strong reactions among Ghanaians both at home and abroad, while also reigniting concerns about the safety of Ghanaian citizens living in other African countries.
Such incidents highlight recurring xenophobic tensions in parts of South Africa, often linked to economic challenges and unemployment. In this case, foreign nationals were reportedly targeted and blamed for limited job opportunities.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs acted swiftly after the video emerged.
Speaking to the media, Harold Agyeman, Coordinating Director in charge of Political and Economic Affairs, confirmed that the government had arranged for Asamoah’s safe return to Ghana.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad, stating that the evacuation was carried out under ministerial directive to ensure the victim’s safety.
Mr Agyeman also noted that Ghana continues to engage with South African authorities, relying on their assurances to address such incidents, which could strain relations between African nations.
He emphasized that safeguarding Ghanaian citizens overseas remains a top priority, especially in situations involving threats or violence.
